拍品描述
An imposing Igbo Alusi shrine figure (Nigeria) Nigeria, Igbo culture, 20th century. Carved wood Alusi figure shown standing with elongated body, high crested coiffure. The face is strongly modeled with almond-shaped eyes, painted lips, and dark pigment around the eyes, while the torso bears painted linear ornament and a central cross-form motif. The figure retains traces of white and brown/black pigment over a worn and weathered surface. Alusi figures are associated with Igbo spiritual practice and are traditionally understood as embodiments or attendants of local deities, ancestral forces, or shrine figures.
