An impressively large blue and white pottery dish, Safavid Iran, second half 17th century, On short straight foot, the blue painted decoration outlined in black consisting of an elegant looping vine bearing large flowers and leaves to the well, the steep rounded cavetto with a continuous scrolling tendrils bearing the same, the gently sloping lip with hatched patterns and simplified blooms, the exterior with a bold and swaying leafed and floral tendril, on white ground, the base marked with pseudo Chinese seal, with two old collection or inventory labels : the first, rectangular with initials F.M., probably an inventory number or initials, the second, circular and serrated inscribed in black ink (P9?), now mostly erased, loss to lip, 38.6cm. diam. Provenance: Private London collection formed in the 1950-60s and thence by descent Brown University contains a collection of ceramics donated by Adrienne Minassian which contain similar labels to the base.
