An impressive solid silver gilt fruit and knife set in for six place settings in Canova pattern, Chawner & Co., London 1880 a highly ornate service inspired by Antonin Canova's Neoclassical sculpture, the 'Three Graces', figural decoration to handles and blades, housed in the original purple silk and velvet lined presentation case, crisply hallmarked GA for Chawner & Co 22cm knives 840gms silver weight NOTE Founded in 1815 Chawner & Co., was regarded as the most important manufacturer of spoons and forks in London. Created about 1850 the design was presented as an exemplar of fine British craftsmanship at the Great Exhibition of 1851, in London's Crystal Palace.
