A large signed composite Safavid lacquered papier mâché pencase (qalamdan), Persia, late 17th century, of typical oblong form, signed to lid the work of Muhammad, possibly Muhammad Zaman, decorated to lid and sides with a dense design of flowers and leaves outlined in gold the base plain black, the interior green, the lid mounted upside down on the base, the two likely two separate penboxes, 35.1cm long x 7.1cm. diam.
