An Attic black-figure lip-cup, mid-6th Century B.C, decorated with a band of black around the lip and middle of the bowl, the lower section of the bowl, stemmed foot and handles black-glazed, the interior with central dot and circle, circumscribed with nine slender linear bands around the rim interior, 17cm diam, 7.8cm high Provenance: Phillips Auctioneers London, Antiquities, Icons and Early Works of Art, 27 November 2001, Lot 50 (part lot) Private Collection, London Literature: Little Master cups were produced in Athens in the mid 6th century BC. Their name is based on their fine small-format and decoration. The Little Masters specialised in a delicate, miniature style of vase-painting, with the lip-cup being one of their favoured shapes to decorate.
