A finely potted Chinese porcelain charger decorated in the Wucai palette with a lively five-clawed dragon confronting a magnificent phoenix amid flowering vines and scrolling foliage. The dragon, painted in underglaze blue with iron-red flames and green highlights, is shown pursuing the celestial bird, a traditional pairing symbolizing the harmonious union of the Emperor and Empress, imperial authority, and prosperity. The broad cavetto is left in a soft celadon glaze, drawing attention to the richly decorated central medallion.The exterior is similarly adorned with continuous floral scrolls, dragons, phoenixes, and auspicious botanical motifs executed in vibrant enamels of green, iron red, yellow, aubergine, and underglaze blue. The restrained celadon-glazed foot interior contrasts elegantly with the colorful decoration.The underside bears a six-character underglaze blue mark reading Made during the Jiajing reign of the Great Ming, a reign mark frequently used on later porcelains as an expression of admiration for the celebrated wares of the Ming dynasty.Probably Qing dynasty, Kangxi period (1662?1722), or later in the Kangxi style.
