Artist: Pu Songchuang (1892-1966) and Pu Xuezhai (1893-1966) HORSES BENEATH PINE TREES The present work depicts a tranquil group of horses resting beneath ancient pine branches. Gracefully composed in a tall vertical format, the painting combines the monumental presence of the pine with the quiet dignity of the grazing horses, creating an atmosphere of serenity and scholarly refinement.The sweeping pine branches occupy the upper portion of the composition, their finely rendered needles and twisting limbs displaying the artists? mastery of traditional brush techniques. Wei Tao-Ming (Wei Daoming), (October 28, 1899 - May 18, 1978) was a prominent Chinese diplomat, statesman, and senior official of the Republic of China. Born in Jiangxi Province, he studied law in the United States and became active in the Nationalist government under Chiang Kai-shek. During the Second World War, Wei served as the Republic of China's Ambassador to the United States from 1942 to 1946, playing an important role in strengthening Sino-American relations during the Allied war effort. He later held several key government positions, including Governor of Taiwan Province (1947-1949), Ambassador to Japan, and Minister of Foreign Affairs of the Republic of China from 1966 to 1971. Wei remained an influential figure in Chinese diplomacy throughout the mid-twentieth century and was closely involved in the Republic of China's international affairs during a period of major political transition in East Asia. ARTIST BIO: Pu Songchuang (1892-1966) and Pu Xuezhai (1893-1966)Chinese painters, calligraphers, and members of the Qing imperial clanPu Songchuang and Pu Xuezhai were distinguished members of the Aisin Gioro imperial family and prominent representatives of the twentieth-century Chinese literati tradition. Educated in the classical curriculum of the Qing court, both artists cultivated poetry, calligraphy, painting, and scholarship, preserving the refined artistic ideals of the late imperial period.Pu Songchuang, a cousin of Pu Ru (Pu Xinyu), was known for his landscapes, flowers, and calligraphy. His works display elegant brushwork and a restrained scholarly style rooted in the traditions of the Ming and Qing masters. Although less widely known than some members of the imperial family, his paintings are appreciated for their refinement and literati spirit.Pu Xuezhai, courtesy name Ruopu, was among the most accomplished artists of the Manchu imperial clan. A gifted painter, calligrapher, seal carver, and connoisseur, he became particularly celebrated for landscapes, bamboo, pines, and traditional subjects executed with meticulous brushwork and classical elegance. His calligraphy, especially in regular and clerical scripts, was highly regarded by contemporaries.Following the fall of the Qing dynasty, both artists remained devoted to the preservation of traditional Chinese culture and continued the scholarly pursuits associated with the imperial literati. Their artistic activities contributed significantly to the continuation of orthodox painting traditions during the Republican period.Collaborative works by Pu Songchuang and Pu Xuezhai are particularly valued for combining the artistic accomplishments of two members of the Qing imperial house. Such works embody the cultivated aesthetic, literary refinement, and cultural continuity that characterize the artistic legacy of the Aisin Gioro family and remain highly desirable among collectors of modern Chinese literati art.
