Wei Tao-Ming (Wei Daoming), (October 28, 1899 - May 18, 1978) was a prominent Chinese diplomat, statesman, and senior official of the Republic of China. Born in Jiangxi Province, he studied law in the United States and became active in the Nationalist government under Chiang Kai-shek. During the Second World War, Wei served as the Republic of China's Ambassador to the United States from 1942 to 1946, playing an important role in strengthening Sino-American relations during the Allied war effort. He later held several key government positions, including Governor of Taiwan Province (1947-1949), Ambassador to Japan, and Minister of Foreign Affairs of the Republic of China from 1966 to 1971. Wei remained an influential figure in Chinese diplomacy throughout the mid-twentieth century and was closely involved in the Republic of China's international affairs during a period of major political transition in East Asia. ARTIST BIO: Zhao Wangyun (1906-1977) was one of the most important Chinese painters of the twentieth century and a founding figure of the Chang?an School of painting. Born in Hebei province, he studied art in Beijing before establishing his career as both a painter and illustrator. Throughout his life, Zhao remained deeply committed to depicting the lives of ordinary people and the landscapes of northwestern China.During the 1930s, Zhao gained recognition for his illustrations and reportage drawings that documented rural society and social conditions. His travels throughout the countryside profoundly influenced his artistic vision, leading him to develop a distinctive style that combined traditional Chinese brushwork with direct observation from life.Following the establishment of the People?s Republic of China, Zhao devoted considerable attention to the landscapes and peoples of Shaanxi, Gansu, and other regions of northwestern China. Together with artists such as Shi Lu, he helped establish the Chang?an School, which emphasized sketching from nature, regional character, and the revitalization of traditional ink painting through firsthand experience.His paintings are characterized by vigorous brushwork, simplified forms, and expressive compositions that capture the vastness of the Loess Plateau, rural villages, mountain scenery, and everyday life.
