Measurements: Length: 23.5 cm, Width: 17.8 cm, Height: 9.7 cm Chinese Famille Rose Mandarin Duck Porcelain Lidded Box. Potted unto a flattened rectangle box, with rounded wide cavetto, correspondence dome lid, raised from rounded sides over a wide cavetto Inner flange circumscribed around the containers lip allows for a perfect fitment on the each rim. Hand painted ornamentations are rendered in white and famille rose design color, depicted of two mandarin duck swim on river surrounded flower bloom and foliage. The Mandarin duck is so named because of its self importance and flamboyant plumage like the high officials yuan mandarins of the Imperial court. It symbolizes loyalty as the ducks mate for life and it is said that when one dies its mate will pine away and also die. Often the mandarin drake is shown with a lotus flower in its beak and its mate with a lotus fruit with the meaning of a wish for children. They are a popular motif on wedding gifts. A mandarin duck and a butterfly together signifies unrequited young love. A duck amongst reeds Yi jia lian ke gives the wish for good luck in examinations, a reed is a homophone for passing exams.The Under-base bears a reign mark, a six under glazed red script characters reign mark.
