Executed in Pu Ru?s refined regular script, the present work exemplifies the artist?s mastery of classical calligraphy. The characters are elegantly proportioned and rendered with controlled yet vigorous brushwork, reflecting his profound grounding in the traditions of the Jin, Tang, and Song masters. The spacious composition and restrained rhythm convey the cultivated spirit that distinguished Pu Ru?s artistic practice. Wei Tao-Ming (Wei Daoming), (October 28, 1899 - May 18, 1978) was a prominent Chinese diplomat, statesman, and senior official of the Republic of China. Born in Jiangxi Province, he studied law in the United States and became active in the Nationalist government under Chiang Kai-shek. During the Second World War, Wei served as the Republic of China's Ambassador to the United States from 1942 to 1946, playing an important role in strengthening Sino-American relations during the Allied war effort. He later held several key government positions, including Governor of Taiwan Province (1947-1949), Ambassador to Japan, and Minister of Foreign Affairs of the Republic of China from 1966 to 1971. Wei remained an influential figure in Chinese diplomacy throughout the mid-twentieth century and was closely involved in the Republic of China's international affairs during a period of major political transition in East Asia. ARTIST BIO: Pu Ru (1896-1963), Chinese painter, calligrapher, and scholar.Pu Ru, courtesy name Xinyu and sobriquet Xishan Yishi, was one of the most celebrated painters and calligraphers of twentieth-century China. A descendant of the Qing imperial family and a cousin of the last emperor Puyi, he received a traditional education in the classics, poetry, calligraphy, and painting from an early age.Following the fall of the Qing dynasty, Pu devoted himself to scholarship and the arts, emerging as one of the foremost literati painters of the modern era. Together with Zhang Daqian, he became known as one of the ?Southern Zhang and Northern Pu? (Nan Zhang Bei Pu), reflecting their preeminent positions in twentieth-century Chinese painting.Pu Ru excelled in landscape, figure, horse, and bird-and-flower subjects, as well as poetry and calligraphy. His paintings draw inspiration from Song and Yuan dynasty masters, characterized by elegant brushwork, refined compositions, and a profound sense of classical scholarship. His calligraphy, particularly in regular and running scripts, was equally admired for its purity and cultivated restraint.After relocating to Taiwan in 1949, Pu continued to paint, teach, and write, exerting a lasting influence on Chinese artistic circles. His works from this period often display an increased lyricism while maintaining the scholarly spirit of the traditional literati ideal.Today, Pu Ru is regarded as one of the last great scholar-artists of China.
