Artist(s): You Qiu (active mid-16th century) The present hanging scroll depicts an elegant riverside excursion set within a tranquil mountain landscape. A covered pleasure boat carrying scholars and attendants glides across lotus-filled waters beneath gently rising hills and distant peaks. Sparse trees, rocky slopes, and mist-filled mountains create an atmosphere of serenity and cultivated leisure, recalling the idealized worlds of literati painting.Executed with delicate ink washes and restrained color, the composition demonstrates the refined pictorial manner associated with Ming courtly and literati traditions. Wei Tao-Ming (Wei Daoming), (October 28, 1899 - May 18, 1978) was a prominent Chinese diplomat, statesman, and senior official of the Republic of China. Born in Jiangxi Province, he studied law in the United States and became active in the Nationalist government under Chiang Kai-shek. During the Second World War, Wei served as the Republic of China's Ambassador to the United States from 1942 to 1946, playing an important role in strengthening Sino-American relations during the Allied war effort. He later held several key government positions, including Governor of Taiwan Province (1947-1949), Ambassador to Japan, and Minister of Foreign Affairs of the Republic of China from 1966 to 1971. Wei remained an influential figure in Chinese diplomacy throughout the mid-twentieth century and was closely involved in the Republic of China's international affairs during a period of major political transition in East Asia. ARTIST BIO: You Qiu (active mid-16th century), courtesy name Ziqiu, was a distinguished painter of the Ming dynasty and a native of Suzhou in Jiangsu Province. He was active during the Jiajing period and belonged to the influential artistic tradition of the Wu School, which emphasized literati ideals, refined brushwork, and scholarly cultivation. Deeply influenced by earlier masters of the Song and Yuan dynasties, You Qiu became particularly renowned for his figure paintings and depictions of historical and literary subjects.His paintings frequently portray scenes from classical literature, episodes from Chinese history, gatherings of scholars, and elegant court figures. Characterized by meticulous line work, carefully balanced compositions, and graceful figure modeling, his works demonstrate a close study of earlier masters while maintaining a distinctive Ming dynasty refinement.
