Artist(s): Lu Bicheng (1883-1943) A solitary sage or Buddhist figure seated upon a rocky outcrop beneath overhanging branches, rendered in an expressive monochrome style. The composition emphasizes spiritual contemplation and withdrawal from worldly concerns. The inscription appears to include the phrase the Buddha?s light shines universally, which accords well with L? Bicheng?s later Buddhist interests. Wei Tao-Ming (Wei Daoming), (October 28, 1899 - May 18, 1978) was a prominent Chinese diplomat, statesman, and senior official of the Republic of China. Born in Jiangxi Province, he studied law in the United States and became active in the Nationalist government under Chiang Kai-shek. During the Second World War, Wei served as the Republic of China's Ambassador to the United States from 1942 to 1946, playing an important role in strengthening Sino-American relations during the Allied war effort. He later held several key government positions, including Governor of Taiwan Province (1947-1949), Ambassador to Japan, and Minister of Foreign Affairs of the Republic of China from 1966 to 1971. Wei remained an influential figure in Chinese diplomacy throughout the mid-twentieth century and was closely involved in the Republic of China's international affairs during a period of major political transition in East Asia. ARTIST BIO: Lu Bicheng (1883-1943) was one of the most accomplished female intellectuals of modern China. A poet, writer, educator, journalist, and Buddhist lay practitioner, she emerged during the late Qing and early Republican periods as an influential advocate for women?s education and social reform. Born in Anhui Province, L? received a classical education uncommon for women of her time and became renowned for her literary talent at an early age.After moving to Tianjin, she served as editor of influential newspapers and actively promoted women?s rights and education. Her poetry, composed in the traditional ci and shi forms, earned widespread acclaim and established her as one of the foremost female poets of modern China. In later years, L? devoted herself to Buddhism, traveled extensively in Europe and Southeast Asia, and became an early advocate for animal protection and vegetarianism.L? Bicheng?s calligraphy and inscriptions are highly regarded for their elegant and refined style, reflecting both her literary accomplishments and spiritual interests. Today, she is remembered as one of the ?Four Talented Women of the Republic of China? and remains an important figure in modern Chinese literary and cultural history.
