Artist: Lu Yifei (1908-1997) PINE AND BIRDS This graceful hanging scroll depicts a pair of birds perched among the twisting branches of an ancient pine tree. The vigorous pine needles and weathered trunk occupy the upper portion of the composition, while flowering plants and rocky outcrops below create a balanced and tranquil setting. The artist skillfully contrasts the dense texture of the pine foliage with the open spaces surrounding the birds, producing a sense of both movement and serenity. The pine tree has long symbolized longevity, steadfastness, and moral integrity in Chinese art, while paired birds often represent harmony, companionship, and domestic happiness. Together, these auspicious motifs convey wishes for enduring friendship, longevity, and peace.Executed with controlled brushwork and restrained coloration, the painting demonstrates Lu Yifei?s mastery of traditional bird-and-flower painting. The fine rendering of the birds, expressive treatment of the pine branches, and subtle use of color reflect the artist?s deep understanding of both Song academy painting and literati aesthetics.
