Dimensions: 56-3/4" H x 78" W Chinese Qing Dynasty Double Dragon Blue Wooven Rug. A finely handwoven Tibetan carpet featuring a striking pair of confronting five-clawed dragons set against a deep indigo field. The dragons, rendered in vibrant shades of red, ivory, and gold, grasp flaming pearls while surrounded by stylized cloud scrolls and auspicious emblems. A colorful geometric border frames the composition, with the upper cartouche woven with the Chinese characters Reserved for Chuxiu Palace, indicating its intended use for the Chuxiu Palace within Beijings Forbidden City.Dragon carpets bearing palace inscriptions were woven for imperial residences during the Qing dynasty, serving both decorative and ceremonial purposes. The dragon, an enduring symbol of imperial authority, power, and prosperity, combined with the flaming pearl representing wisdom and enlightenment, reflects the rich symbolism of the Qing imperial court.Whether originally woven for palace use or later produced in the traditional palace style, the carpet displays the bold artistic vocabulary and meticulous craftsmanship characteristic of Tibetan weaving traditions made for the Chinese imperial market.Probably Tibet or Inner Mongolia for the Qing court, late Qing dynasty to early 20th century.
