Artist(s): Hongyi Master (1880-1942) The text is a Buddhist passage discussing the stages of meditation and spiritual realization, written in his highly distinctive late style of refined regular script.The text emphasizes abandoning worldly attachments, literary vanity, and habitual desires in order to attain clarity of mind and spiritual awakening. Such Buddhist teachings were among the subjects most frequently copied by Master Hongyi during his later monastic years.The calligraphy displays the qualities for which Hongyi is celebrated: restrained brushwork, spacious composition, and remarkable serenity. Wei Tao-Ming (Wei Daoming), (October 28, 1899 - May 18, 1978) was a prominent Chinese diplomat, statesman, and senior official of the Republic of China. Born in Jiangxi Province, he studied law in the United States and became active in the Nationalist government under Chiang Kai-shek. During the Second World War, Wei served as the Republic of China's Ambassador to the United States from 1942 to 1946, playing an important role in strengthening Sino-American relations during the Allied war effort. He later held several key government positions, including Governor of Taiwan Province (1947-1949), Ambassador to Japan, and Minister of Foreign Affairs of the Republic of China from 1966 to 1971. Wei remained an influential figure in Chinese diplomacy throughout the mid-twentieth century and was closely involved in the Republic of China's international affairs during a period of major political transition in East Asia. ARTIST BIO: Hongyi Master (1880-1942), secular name Li Shutong, was one of the most influential cultural figures of modern China. He was an artist, calligrapher, painter, musician, educator, playwright, and later a Buddhist monk of the Vinaya school.Born in Tianjin, Hongyi studied in Shanghai and Japan, where he was exposed to Western art, music, and theater. He became one of the pioneers of modern art education in China and taught at several institutions, including the Zhejiang First Normal School. Many important artists, including Feng Zikai, were among his students.In 1918, Li Shutong was ordained as a Buddhist monk and took the Dharma name Hongyi. After entering monastic life, his artistic style underwent a profound transformation. His calligraphy became increasingly simple, restrained, and spiritual, emphasizing purity of line and inner tranquility rather than technical display.Hongyi?s calligraphy is immediately recognizable for its sparse compositions, rounded brushwork, and quiet elegance. His works frequently contain Buddhist aphorisms, moral teachings, and verses concerning compassion, self-cultivation, and detachment. Because of their spiritual character and distinctive style, his calligraphic works are highly sought after by collectors.
