Artist: Pan Tianshou (1897-1971) BIRDS, FISH, AND ROCKS The present work is an outstanding example of Pan Tianshou?s mature flower-and-bird style, combining monumental rock formations, bamboo, aquatic plants, birds, and fish within a highly inventive composition. A small bird perches atop a weathered cliff while another rests upon the rocks below, as a solitary fish swims through the open water at the lower right, creating a subtle dialogue between the realms of earth, air, and water. The composition is dominated by boldly constructed rock formations rendered with broad washes and vigorous brushwork. Clusters of pine needles, bamboo leaves, and grasses animate the rocky surfaces, while the strategic use of empty space creates a striking sense of balance and movement. The fish swimming below introduces an element of quiet vitality and demonstrates the artist?s remarkable ability to suggest life through the most economical means.Pan Tianshou?s characteristic style is evident in the angular forms, asymmetrical arrangement, and powerful calligraphic brushwork. The juxtaposition of monumental rocks with diminutive birds and fish reflects his lifelong interest in achieving dramatic visual tension through contrasts of scale and space. The composition embodies both the grandeur of nature and the poetic sensibility of the Chinese literati tradition. During the Second World War, Wei served as the Republic of China's Ambassador to the United States from 1942 to 1946, playing an important role in strengthening Sino-American relations during the Allied war effort. He later held several key government positions, including Governor of Taiwan Province (1947-1949), Ambassador to Japan, and Minister of Foreign Affairs of the Republic of China from 1966 to 1971. Wei remained an influential figure in Chinese diplomacy throughout the mid-twentieth century and was closely involved in the Republic of China's international affairs during a period of major political transition in East Asia. ARTIST BIO: Pan Tianshou (1897-1971), Chinese painter, calligrapher, educator, and art theorist.Pan Tianshou was one of the most important masters of twentieth-century Chinese painting and a leading advocate of the traditional Chinese artistic tradition. Born in Zhejiang Province, he studied at the Zhejiang First Normal School and later became closely associated with the National Academy of Art in Hangzhou, where he served as professor, director, and eventually president.Working primarily in flower-and-bird painting, landscapes, and calligraphy, Pan developed a highly distinctive artistic language characterized by monumental compositions, powerful brushwork, and bold structural design. Drawing inspiration from masters such as Shi Tao, Bada Shanren, and the Zhejiang painting tradition, he transformed classical idioms into a modern and highly personal style. His paintings often feature subjects such as eagles, hawks, lotuses, rocks, pine trees, and orchids, rendered with vigorous brushstrokes and dramatic spatial arrangements. The strong calligraphic quality of his brushwork and his innovative use of empty space distinguish his art from that of his contemporaries. As an influential educator and theorist, Pan strongly advocated the preservation and development of Chinese painting traditions during a period of rapid cultural change. His teachings profoundly influenced several generations of artists and established him as one of the most significant figures in modern Chinese art education.Today, Pan Tianshou is regarded as one of the greatest masters of modern Chinese painting. His works, combining monumental strength, scholarly depth, and remarkable originality, are highly sought after by collectors and occupy a central position in the history of twentieth-century Chinese art.
