During the Second World War, Wei served as the Republic of China's Ambassador to the United States from 1942 to 1946, playing an important role in strengthening Sino-American relations during the Allied war effort. He later held several key government positions, including Governor of Taiwan Province (1947-1949), Ambassador to Japan, and Minister of Foreign Affairs of the Republic of China from 1966 to 1971. Wei remained an influential figure in Chinese diplomacy throughout the mid-twentieth century and was closely involved in the Republic of China's international affairs during a period of major political transition in East Asia. ARTIST BIO: Liu Guandao (active late 13th century) was an important painter of the Yuan dynasty who served at the imperial court during the reign of Kublai Khan. Native to Zhongshan in present-day Hebei Province, Liu specialized in figure painting, religious subjects, portraits, and depictions of court life. His paintings are distinguished by refined brushwork, careful composition, and an ability to combine the detailed realism of Song dynasty painting with the emerging aesthetic sensibilities of the Yuan period. Among his most celebrated surviving works is "Kublai Khan Hunting," which vividly portrays the Mongol emperor and his entourage on a hunting expedition and provides valuable insight into court life during the early Yuan dynasty. Although relatively few authenticated works survive, Liu Guandao is regarded as one of the important court painters of the Yuan period, and his paintings are preserved in major museum collections.
