PROVENANCE: The private collection of Earl Sorensen, based in Atlanta, Georgia, represents decades of dedicated collecting in the fields of Buddhist art and Chinese jade. An international businessman who frequently traveled throughout Asia during the 1960s, Sorensen developed a deep appreciation for Eastern art and culture through his extensive business activities.During a business trip to western China, he was presented with a Buddha statue by a local monk. Its pale celadon surface is largely coated with chalky white calcified patina speckled with dark mineral deposits and faint russet staining. Each flat vertical panel is finely incised with repeating interlocking spiral and scroll motifs arranged in orderly horizontal registers. The top and bottom circular collars feature smooth rounded edges refined by ancient grinding. The delicate uniform shallow linework and balanced symmetrical composition exemplify meticulous ritual jade craftsmanship, embodying solemn symbolic aesthetics of traditional Chinese jade ceremonial wares.
