PROVENANCE: The private collection of Earl Sorensen, based in Atlanta, Georgia, represents decades of dedicated collecting in the fields of Buddhist art and Chinese jade. An international businessman who frequently traveled throughout Asia during the 1960s, Sorensen developed a deep appreciation for Eastern art and culture through his extensive business activities.During a business trip to western China, he was presented with a Buddha statue by a local monk. The form features a squared tang at one end flanked by two small side lugs, with a single circular perforation for lashing or suspension, tapering gently to a broad straight cutting edge at the opposite terminal. All edges are softened by long-term burial abrasion and ancient grinding, lacking sharp functional edges. Plain and unadorned without incised ornamentation, it relies on pure geometric silhouette to embody solemn ritual symbolism, a minimalist classical jade ceremonial implement.
