PROVENANCE: The private collection of Earl Sorensen, based in Atlanta, Georgia, represents decades of dedicated collecting in the fields of Buddhist art and Chinese jade. An international businessman who frequently traveled throughout Asia during the 1960s, Sorensen developed a deep appreciation for Eastern art and culture through his extensive business activities.During a business trip to western China, he was presented with a Buddha statue by a local monk. This meaningful gift sparked a lifelong passion for Buddhist artifacts, Chinese jades, and other works reflecting the rich artistic and spiritual traditions of Asia. This rectangular jade ornament is crafted from pale translucent nephrite overlaid with mottled copper-green rust and earthy reddish-brown burial patina. Its flat surface is finely incised with continuous interlocking spiral scroll motifs covering the main panel and tapered openwork terminal. Two rounded perforations pierce the decorative head for threading into jade assemblages, while all outer edges bear soft rounded wear from ancient polishing. The balanced layout combines solid carved body and hollow cut-out detailing, embodying sophisticated linear engraving techniques and solemn symbolic decorative aesthetics of classical ritual jade accessories.
