An international businessman who frequently traveled throughout Asia during the 1960s, Sorensen developed a deep appreciation for Eastern art and culture through his extensive business activities.During a business trip to western China, he was presented with a Buddha statue by a local monk. Crafted from soft pale yellowish celadon jade marked by scattered dark earthy patina and faint reddish mineral staining near the base, this slender S-shaped phoenix pendant features fluid openwork and fine incised spiral scrolls tracing its feathered body. A small suspension hole pierces the curled phoenix crest at the top, with another perforation at the bottom for stringing into jade assemblages. All edges are smoothly rounded by ancient grinding, highlighting the stone?s subtle matte luster. Its elegant undulating silhouette and restrained linear carving embody the refined symbolic zoomorphic aesthetics characteristic of classical jade wearable ritual ornaments.
