Wei Tao-Ming (Wei Daoming), (October 28, 1899 - May 18, 1978) was a prominent Chinese diplomat, statesman, and senior official of the Republic of China. Born in Jiangxi Province, he studied law in the United States and became active in the Nationalist government under Chiang Kai-shek. During the Second World War, Wei served as the Republic of China's Ambassador to the United States from 1942 to 1946, playing an important role in strengthening Sino-American relations during the Allied war effort. He later held several key government positions, including Governor of Taiwan Province (1947-1949), Ambassador to Japan, and Minister of Foreign Affairs of the Republic of China from 1966 to 1971. Wei remained an influential figure in Chinese diplomacy throughout the mid-twentieth century and was closely involved in the Republic of China's international affairs during a period of major political transition in East Asia. ARTIST BIO: Tang Yun (1910-1993), also known by the sobriquet Dashi, was one of the most celebrated painters of the Shanghai School in the twentieth century. Born in Hangzhou, Zhejiang Province, he received traditional artistic training from an early age and later emerged as one of the leading figures of modern Chinese painting. Throughout his long career, Tang Yun was closely associated with the artistic circles of Shanghai and played an important role in preserving and revitalizing the literati traditions of Chinese painting.Renowned for his paintings of flowers, birds, fish, insects, fruits, and landscapes, Tang developed a highly individual style characterized by expressive brushwork, lively compositions, and brilliant yet harmonious color. His works demonstrate a deep understanding of the traditions of Bada Shanren, Shitao, and the masters of the Shanghai School while maintaining a fresh and spontaneous artistic language. His depictions of goldfish, chrysanthemums, orchids, bamboo, and lotus are particularly admired for their vitality and elegance.In addition to his accomplishments as a painter, Tang Yun was an accomplished calligrapher, seal carver, and collector. He served as a leading figure in the Shanghai Chinese Painting Academy and exerted considerable influence upon later generations of artists. His paintings combine scholarly refinement with a spirited sense of life, reflecting both the literati ideals of classical Chinese art and the modern sensibilities of the twentieth century.Today, Tang Yun is regarded as one of the foremost masters of modern Chinese painting. His works are held in major museum collections and remain highly sought after for their artistic vitality, technical mastery, and important position within the development of the Shanghai School.
