PROVENANCE: The private collection of Earl Sorensen, based in Atlanta, Georgia, represents decades of dedicated collecting in the fields of Buddhist art and Chinese jade. An international businessman who frequently traveled throughout Asia during the 1960s, Sorensen developed a deep appreciation for Eastern art and culture through his extensive business activities.During a business trip to western China, he was presented with a Buddha statue by a local monk. Rendered in a continuous coiled dragon silhouette encircling a neat central aperture, its surface is finely incised with interlocking geometric scroll motifs that define the mythical beast?s scales and features. Two small suspension holes are drilled at the top crest for threading cord, while serrated flanges line the outer edge. Smoothly polished rounded edges and precise shallow linework reflect refined ancient jade carving, merging sacred circular ritual form with intricate zoomorphic decorative iconography.
