An international businessman who frequently traveled throughout Asia during the 1960s, Sorensen developed a deep appreciation for Eastern art and culture through his extensive business activities.During a business trip to western China, he was presented with a Buddha statue by a local monk. Rendered in a poised striding profile, the beast features curled ears, an openwork jaw cutout and a spiraled curled tail, with two suspension perforations at head and tail ends for stringing. Its body is decorated with orderly incised geometric scroll patterns symbolizing striped fur, while all outer edges are smoothly rounded from ancient abrasion and polishing. Balancing stylized zoomorphic form and delicate shallow line engraving, it stands as a classic totemic wearable jade ornament embodying refined early jade craftsmanship.
