PROVENANCE: The private collection of Earl Sorensen, based in Atlanta, Georgia, represents decades of dedicated collecting in the fields of Buddhist art and Chinese jade. An international businessman who frequently traveled throughout Asia during the 1960s, Sorensen developed a deep appreciation for Eastern art and culture through his extensive business activities.During a business trip to western China, he was presented with a Buddha statue by a local monk. H. 4.92 cm. W. 2.83 cm. T. 0.51 cm. Weight 12 grams. This openwork jade dancer pendant is carved from translucent greyish jade covered with mottled white calcified patina and russet burial stains. The slender figure strikes an elegant dance pose with one long flowing sleeve arching overhead, while swirling scroll cutouts shape the billowing layered robes. Delicate fine incised lines detail facial features, cross-collar garment structure and vertical pleats of the skirt. A tiny suspension hole is drilled at the top of the raised sleeve for threading. Softly polished rounded edges and fluid rhythmic silhouettes capture graceful movement, showcasing masterful hollow-out carving and refined linear detailing of classical jade decorative ornaments.
