An international businessman who frequently traveled throughout Asia during the 1960s, Sorensen developed a deep appreciation for Eastern art and culture through his extensive business activities.During a business trip to western China, he was presented with a Buddha statue by a local monk. This meaningful gift sparked a lifelong passion for Buddhist artifacts, Chinese jades, and other works reflecting the rich artistic and spiritual traditions of Asia. H. 3.92 cm. W. 3.93 cm. T. 3.56 cm. Weight 86 grams. This barrel-shaped jade bead is carved from two-tone celadon nephrite naturally infused with rich amber russet skin covering its outer rim. Its front face features a boldly sculpted stylized beast mask with prominent rounded eyes, a raised central snout and subtle curved relief detailing for facial contours. Two small circular perforations pierce the upper crest for threading, while a vertical bore runs through the core to string onto jade necklaces. The entire surface bears a smooth glossy patina from long-term handling, with soft rounded sculptural forms that showcase fluid three-dimensional carving and primitive zoomorphic symbolic ornamentation of ancient jade craftsmanship.
