A PAIR OF SCROLL PAINTINGS OF SNOWY LANDSCAPES, c. 1900s China, late Qing Dynasty (1644-1912). Ink and gouache on gauze silk. Each mounted as a hanging scroll on a paper frame with wooden handles. Finely executed to depict a pair of landscape scenes with steep, rugged mountains and scattered shrubs and vegetation, lightly dusted with snow, with small thatched huts nestled at the foot of the towering peaks. Both paintings are inscribed at the upper margin and sealed. The reverse bears a handwritten inscription reading “Mr. W. E. Wheeler. Inscriptions: On one scroll: ji shan shang xue, Lan jin zuo [admiring the snow upon the mountain after the thaw, respectfully made by Lan]; on the other: xue ye yin mei [singing of plum blossoms on a snowy night].
