A CALLIGRAPHY BY ZHU RUZHEN China, first half of the 20th century. Ink on segmented paper. The paper with gold speckles. The fan-shaped painting shows a calligraphy with two seal marks. Inscriptions: The text discusses the history and masters of calligraphy. Signed 'Zhu Ruzhen'. Two seals 'Zhu Ruzhen yin' and 'Jiachen Bangyan.' Zhu Ruzhen (1870-1943), also named Yiyuan, was a calligrapher and a writer during late Qing to Republic of China. He achieved second place in the last Imperial Examination in 1904 and later worked in Hanlin Academy as an editor. During the Republic of China, he founded the Hong Kong Yiyuan College and the Hong Kong Confucian Academy and served as its director. He also worked at the University of Hong Kong as a teacher of philosophy and literature. Dimensions: Image size 50.4 x 21.5 cm, paper 63.5 x 32.5 cm Laid down on fabric coated paper.
