SHEN PU: ‘CROW’ China, late 19th century. Ink and gouache on paper. Set inside a vintage wood frame, behind glass. Depicting a cawing crow perched on a snowy branch. Inscriptions: To the bottom-left, signed SHEN PU and with a seal Dimensions: Image size 28 x 22 cm, Size incl. frame 40 x 34 cm Shen Pu, courtesy name is Hengzhi/ the art name is Nanpin, was born in Xinshi Town, Deqing County, Huzhou City, Zhejiang Province (now Wuxing District, Huzhou City, Zhejiang Province). A Qing dynasty painter, he grew up in a poor family. By the time he was 20, he made a living by creating paintings. He specialized in painting flowers, hair, and running beasts, and was particularly good at maid paintings. He went to Japan, where he stayed for three years and created the ‘Nanpin school’ sketches of flowers and birds. His works were highly praised by the Japanese, and he was called ‘the first foreign painter.’
