A LARGE POLYCHROME, YELLOW-GROUND PORCELAIN BALUSTER VASE, REPUBLIC PERIOD China, 20th century. Skillfully modeled, the ovoid body resting on a tapered foot, with gently sloping shoulders and a distinctively raised, lobed edge, surmounted by a waisted neck and a bulbous rim. The exterior is vividly painted in luminous enamels of green and blue over a prominent mustard-yellow ground that entirely covers the striated body of the vessel, framed above and below by encircling bands of stylized hawk feathers. The neck is elaborately decorated with a rich composition of heterogeneous elements, including a band of ruyi motifs, a key-fret border, and a diaper pattern incorporating further feathers and ruyi elements, surmounted on opposite sides by a pair of small elephant-head appliqués. The underside incised with an apocryphal six-character underglaze-blue seal mark reading Da Qing Daoguang nianzhi [made during the reign of Daoguang of the Great Qing dynasty].
