A MING-STYLE BLUE AND WHITE PORCELAIN ‘FISHING BOAT’ WATER POT, LATE QING DYNASTY TO REPUBLIC PERIOD China, 19th-20th century. Boldly modeled in the form of a traditional Chinese fishing boat (sanban), composed of two vaulted sheltered areas at either end of the deck, rendered as woven wicker structures, as suggested by the cross-hatched incised decoration that adorns them. Between these, a larger arched sheltered space houses two small figures standing back-to-back, each gazing toward opposite sides of the vessel. The surface finely painted in cobalt blue under a clear white glaze, depicting the crashing waves through which the boat appears to move along the hull, complemented by further decorative detailing on the roofed compartments.
