A BLUE AND WHITE PORCELAIN ‘DRAGONS IN PURSUIT OF THE FLAMING PEARL’ BOWL, QING DYNASTY TO REPUBLIC PERIOD China, 19th-20th century. The globular body gently tapering toward a straight foot, with rounded shoulders rising to a short neck and a broad circular mouth. The exterior decorated in varying shades of cobalt blue beneath a clear transparent glaze, depicting a pair of stylized five-clawed dragons pursuing the sacred pearl (tama) amid swirling clouds. The central composition is framed below by a highly abstracted foliate diaper band and above by an encircling frieze of ruyi motifs. The underside bears an apocryphal six-character underglaze-blue mark reading Da Ming Wanli nianzhi [made during the reign of Wanli of the Great Ming dynasty].
