A RARE POLYCHROME PORCELAIN ‘FAUX BOIS’ BASIN, LATE QING DYNASTY China, late 19th to early 20th century. Thickly potted, with striated sides modeled in imitation of wooden staves gently tapering toward a broad circular foot. The side surfaces are painted with alternating coral-red and black enamel bands, while the interior base is rendered with a trompe-l’œil wood-grain effect. The exterior sides and foot are further encircled by relief bands in yellow enamel imitating plaited cords. The underside, covered with a clear transparent glaze revealing the milky-white tone of the porcelain body, bears an apocryphal six-character underglaze-blue mark reading Da Qing Yongzheng nianzhi [made during the reign of Yongzheng of the Great Qing dynasty].
