A BARBED BLUE AND WHITE PORCELAIN ‘PHOENIX’ DISH, QING DYNASTY China, 18th-19th century. Finely potted, with deep, rounded sides rising from a short, gently tapered foot to a slightly everted, lobed rim. The interior boldly decorated in underglaze cobalt blue with a central medallion enclosing a highly stylized mythical bird in flight amid blossoming flowerheads, framed by a double-line border and encircled by a continuous frieze of geometric cross motifs. The exterior further embellished with leafy peony sprays. The recessed base bearing an apocryphal four-character mark in underglaze blue reading Xuande Nian Zhi [made during the reign of Xuande].
