A ‘BLEU DE HUÉ’ PORCELAIN ‘DRAGONS PURSUING THE SACRED PEARL’ BOWL, MINH MANG MARK AND POSSIBLY OF THE PERIOD China for the Vietnamese Market, 19th century. Finely potted, with deep, gently rounded sides supported on a short, straight foot. The exterior delicately painted in cobalt blue beneath a clear transparent glaze, depicting a pair of dragons writhing through swirling clouds in dynamic pursuit of the flaming pearl (tama), contrasting with the interior, left undecorated. The underside, similarly decorated in cobalt blue underglaze, bearing the Vietnamese four-character mark Mingming nianzhi [Minh Mang]. Dimensions: Diameter 14.6 cm Minh Mang (chin. Mingming) was the second emperor of the Nguyen dynasty of Vietnam, reigning from 1820-1841. He was well known for his opposition to French involvement in Vietnam, completing the final Vietnamese conquest of Champa, temporary annexation of Cambodia, and his rigid Confucian orthodoxy.
