A PAIR OF FAMILLE-ROSE ‘COCKEREL AND PEONIES’ DISHES, YONGZHENG-QIANLONG PERIOD China, 18th century. Each dish is finely painted to the interior in bright enamels with a cockerel standing on rockwork, its head raised towards a butterfly hovering over large peony blossoms borne on leafy stalks swaying in the wind, framed by eight ruyi-head panels enclosing auspicious fruits and flowers against a scroll ground, encircled by a band of scroll below the café-au-lait rim, the exterior sides with two detached fruiting sprays in iron-red.
