AN UNUSUAL CIZHOU STEM CUP, MING DYNASTY China, 14th-15th century. Sturdily potted, the flared sides rising from a tall spreading foot to an everted rim, covered in a creamy ivory-white glaze and finely painted with slightly irregular dark-brown bands of varying width, the lower half of the foot left unglazed revealing the buff ware. Dimensions: Height 8.3 cm Literature comparison: Only a small number of Cizhou stem cups have been preserved due to their delicate shape and tall foot. Compare a related Cizhou stem cup, dated 14th-15th century, 9 cm high, in the Philadelphia Museum of Art, accession number 1926-30-14.
