A CIZHOU SLIP PAINTED ‘THEATRE MASK’ WHISTLE, JIN-YUAN DYNASTY China, Hebei, 1115-1368. Modeled as a mask with pierced animated eyes, a wide grinning mouth, and tall pointed ears, the exterior freely and vividly painted in a rich dark brown over a thick white slip with highlights in red, all under a transparent glaze, the unglazed back revealing the buff-gray ware.
