A CIZHOU SLIP PAINTED ‘TIGER MASK’ WHISTLE, JIN-YUAN DYNASTY China, Hebei, 1115-1368. Modeled as a tiger head with a broad snout, pricked ears, and pierced eyes, a third aperture to the top, the exterior freely and vividly painted in a rich dark brown over a thick white slip with its characteristic stripes, all under a transparent glaze, the unglazed back revealing the buff-gray ware.
