拍品描述

A SMALL WHITE GLAZED DINGYAO FIGURE OF A MONKEY, NORTHERN SONG DYNASTY China, Hebei Province, 960-1127. Well potted, the primate seated on its haunches atop a circular base. Its right arm resting upon the knee while the left is raised close to the face. The head of the animal held upright with an attentive expression marked by bulging eyes set in deep sockets beneath boldly carved eyebrows, flared nostrils, and a slightly open mouth. The fur of the ape subtly suggested across the top of the head. Dimensions: Height 4.5 cm The monkey (hou), which occupies the ninth position in the Chinese zodiac, is traditionally regarded as the most significant and esteemed among the non-domesticated animals, a status attested by the considerable number of early miniatures depicting it. Literature comparison: Compare a related white glazed cizhou ware figure of a monkey, China, Hebei province, Northern Song or Jin dynasty, dated 11th-12th century, 7.5 cm high, in the Victoria and Albert Museum, accession number C.155-1938, and illustrated in: Koos de Jong, Small China: Early Chinese Miniatures, 2021, p. 119, no. 96.
