A BLUE AND WHITE PORCELAIN ‘AUSPICIOUS BOYS’ SNUFF BOTTLE, REPUBLIC PERIOD China, 1912-1949. The oval-shaped body resting on a rectangular foot and rising to a circular neck with a narrow mouth. The exterior painted in shades of greyish-blue beneath a clear, transparent glaze, to depict on one side a young boy carrying a large auspicious radish across his shoulders amid swirling clouds, while on the other a youthful figure is shown seated on the ground beside fallen lotus pods and a blooming lotus flower. The sides, neck, and stopper of the bottle, the latter domed in form and surmounted by a knop finial, further decorated with foliate motifs set against a predominantly blue ground. The recessed base bearing an inscription with two heavily worn characters, now illegible. Stopper: Porcelain stopper Dimensions: Height 73 mm (incl. stopper), Diameter 12 mm (neck) and 6 mm (mouth)
