Ɏ A CANTON SCHOOL IVORY ‘AUSPICIOUS CHARACTERS’ SNUFF BOTTLE, c. 1920 China, late Qing Dynasty to Republic Period (1850-1949). Of baluster form, rising from an oval foot to broad shoulders and a tall cylindrical neck. One side boldly carved in relief with a stylized “longevity” character, the reverse depicting the “double happiness” character, and flanked by mythical beast-mask handles. The neck and stopper encircled by key-fret bands, and the recessed base carved with an apocryphal four-character mark.
