A BLACK OVERLAY GLASS ‘PROPITIOUS ANIMALS’ SNUFF BOTTLE, REPUBLIC PERIOD China, 1912-1949. The bulbous body raised on a short foot and surmounted by a gently waisted neck with a narrow mouth and flared rim. The exterior finely carved in high relief through the black overlay to the translucent icy-white ground, and decorated with three oval panels depicting animals in natural settings, including a deer amid luxuriant pine branches, a pair of auspicious bats in flight suspending a coin tied with a cord, and a monkey playfully carrying a fruiting peach branch.
