A CAMEO HARDSTONE ‘LEAPING CARP’ SNUFF BOTTLE, REPUBLIC PERIOD China, 1912-1949. The flattened globular body supported on a short oval foot, with gently sloping shoulders rising to a stepped, waisted neck with a narrow mouth and flat rim. The exterior carved in high relief on one side, depicting a leaping carp, its scaly body finely incised, above swirling waters. The finely polished, opaque stone of an attractive leached white tone, enlivened by a delicate network of grey veining, and exhibiting an unctuous feel overall. The domed stopper fitted with a brass spoon terminating in a characteristic hand with elongated fingers, reminiscent of those seen in Buddhist bronze figures.
