A SMALL CAMEO AGATE ‘BUDDHIST LION’ SNUFF BOTTLE, REPUBLIC PERIOD China, 1912-1949. Finely hollowed, the flattened globular body supported on an oval foot and surmounted by a cylindrical neck with a flat mouth. The exterior carved in high relief on one side using a distinctive russet inclusion of the stone to depict a crouching Buddhist lion (shishi), with its powerful head turned as if looking backward. The finely polished, translucent stone of a greenish-white tone with inclusions and variegated veining in multiple tones, ranging from icy white to russet and deeper dark shades.
