AN AUSPICIOUS WHITE JADE ‘SHUANGXI’ SNUFF BOTTLE, REPUBLIC PERIOD China, 1912-1949. The flattened rectangular body supported on a stepped foot, with steeply angled shoulders rising to a cylindrical neck with a narrow mouth and a slightly concave rim. The exterior carved in high relief on either side with an ornamental design bearing the Chinese auspicious characters Shuangxi (double happiness), while the side panels are further decorated with highly stylized mask motifs of mythical creatures. The finely polished, translucent stone of a striking icy-white tone.
