A CINNABAR LAQUER BOX AND COVER WITH SCHOLARS China, late Qing Dynasty (1644-1912). Of lobed oval form, the cover deeply carved through layers of cinnabar lacquer with two scholars seated in a garden landscape beneath a willow tree, playing ‘Weiqi’, framed by rocks, trees, and distant mountains, all reserved on a fine geometric diaper ground. The sides of the box and cover similarly carved with dense diaper patterns between raised borders, the interior and underside lacquered black. Dimensions: Size 13 x 10 x 4.8 cm
