A ROOTWOOD FIGURE OF AN IMMORTAL AND TWO FURTHER FIGURES China, late 19th to 20th century. Comprising three figures: a carved rootwood figure of a bearded scholar or immortal standing on a gnarled naturalistic root base, wearing a tall cap and flowing robes, holding an attribute before the chest; a composite figure of Budai standing on a tiered circular plinth, smiling broadly with both arms raised; and a cast stone figure of a Buddhist lion, recumbent with its head turned sharply to the side, the mouth open, the mane and body finely incised, surrounded by playful cubs, the cast stone with a lustrous dark patina.
