A GILT BRONZE FIGURE OF THE STANDING BUDDHA, SIXTEEN KINGDOMS PERIOD STYLE Expert’s note: The lacquer gilding is a later addition, possibly applied in Japan in the early 20th century. The original gilding appears to be entirely worn off—an indicator of significant age. Distinct traces of resilient red pigment are still visible in the folds of the robe, confirming the figure’s ritual use. The literature comparison below shows a similar, though smaller and earlier example dated to the Sixteen Kingdoms period (4th century) in the Kyoto National Museum. During that period, we occasionally find works that not only reflect strong Korean influence but were in fact produced in Korea for Chinese patrons. While the present lot is of much later date, such a provenance cannot be entirely excluded. China or Korea, 19th to first half of the 20th century, or earlier. Cast standing in samabhanga on a tall lotus base with beaded rim, his right hand raised in abhaya mudra and his left lowered holding the folds of the robe, dressed in loose robes draped over both shoulders and cascading in richly carved folds. The serene face with almond-shaped eyes and bow-shaped lips framed by a curled moustache, flanked by pendulous earlobes, the neatly incised hair pulled up into a topknot. Dimensions: Height 24.4 cm The figure has several characteristics that show a strong influence of stone Buddhist statues made in Gandhara, including striated lines of hair (instead of curls), clearly defined eyes, a conspicuous moustache, and the robe that is draped in parallel folds over both shoulders.
