A BRONZE FIGURE OF BALAKRISHNA, INDIA, 18TH-19TH CENTURY India, 18th-19th century. Krishna as the Divine Child, known as Balakrishna, is depicted crawling on his hands and knees, holding a ball of butter which according to legend he had taken from his mother Yashoda’s churn. Remnants of red pigment on the surface indicate traces of the original polychrome decoration. The playful pose conveys innocence, joy, and the mischievous nature of the deity in Hindu mythology, while the careful modeling of his posture and expressive features highlights the liveliness and charm of the young god.
